The True Cost

So Christmas is coming and Black Friday is tomorrow, and we're all shopping like mad to then spend January broke with a mass of products we probably don't even need or want, but bought because we thought it was a good deal, or someone gave you a gift you'll never wear. We don't think about the scale in which this is happening, but a documentary that I watched recently called, 'The True Cost' got me thinking about the impacts of your consumer habits.

'This is a story about clothing. It's about the clothes we wear, the people who make them and the impact it's having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking new documentary film that pulls back the curtain on an unseen part of our world and asks us each to consider, who pays the price for our clothing?'

I guess what am trying to talk about is unhealthy consumer habits. Am just as guilty as the next person for this, but christmas just sends us all crazy, and what we don't realise is that we've all been sucked into this mad consumption of materialistic goods. This documentary shows us the impacts of our greed for consumption, and how the design/fashion industry is taking advantage of our desire, and encouraging us to spend more and more, weather its another pair of heels in Zara that you have to own to add to your extensive collection of shoes that you probably only get chance to wear once because you can't be seen in the same outfit twice. One of the ways they do this is though leading us to believe that consuming goods will make you happy, and solve all life issues and they do this though advertising. i.e. if you buy our perfume, that guy you like will fall deeply in love with you. Is just an example of one.

As a new student, organizing finance is a part of growing up, and what I’ve realized is how easy it is to fall into the hands of cleaver advertising. But this is happening in a more serious way. For example I walked past a tramp the other day, yet he had an iPhone!!!! What is wrong with society when you’re homeless, but can afford apple products? Priorities people!  How has advertising become stronger than our natural survival instincts?
